My name is Robert Washburn, I am originally from Marion, Alabama. I moved my family to Georgia in 1989, in 2007, we moved to Saint George, Utah.

All of my knives begin in the fire... They are all hand forged with a hammer on the anvil. They are guaranteed to cut and be a treasure and joy to use for a lifetime. I have worked with my hands all of my life. I made my first knife in my high school shop class in 1964. Which is something that would never happen in today's schools.

My interest was rekindled in bladesmithing and forging when I became a member of the Ocmulgee Blacksmith Guild.

Then in 1996, I joined the American Bladesmith Society and began working towards my Journeyman Smith rating. Along the way, I have met and I hope gained a lot of friends that are as passionate about making knives as myself. I have learned that knifemakers are the most helpful group of people and are willing to share their knowledge and experiences. In June of 2000, I obtained my Journeyman Smith rating in Atlanta at the Blade Show.

Scagel Knives have always fascinated me. I love the contrast and lines of the knives, which has greatly influenced the knives that I make today. I enjoy working with 52100 steel for my blades. It is hard to move, but you can't beat the end results for sharpness and stamina.

My handle materials vary with my customers as well as supply. I enjoy experimenting with different textures and materials. I make all of my own sheaths by hand. Like the knives that go in them, no two are alike. I have attempted to gain as much knowledge as I can about knives and their use through reading, videos, classes, organizations, other knifemakers and knife related websites.

I love making knives and love to talk about knifemaking. I enjoy sharing my ideas with others that are interested in knifemaking.

If you own one of my knives or if you are thinking about purchasing one in the future, I want you to know that you will get your monies worth. Currently, I am making several styles of knives including folders and swords. Bowies are fascinating to make as well as learning about their history.

I am retired from the Army National Guard after 24 years. I am a past member of the Ocmulgee Blacksmith Guild and American Bladesmith Society.

When I am not working, I am in my shop making knives.

I have four beautiful children and seven wonderful grandchildren. My wife Deborah helps with my website and keeps me grounded. She is also one of my staunchest knife critics

I am available to teach bladesmithing one on one or in small groups. Feel free to email me with any questions or comments. rlwashburn@excite.com
